Salamun alaykum,

Minal ‘Aidin wal Fa-izin

Abundant gratitude to Allah S.W.T. for we are once again observing the great day of festival of Eid ul Fitr. The arabic word ‘eid’ is derived from the root ‘awd meaning to return. This is a specific kind of return; where after enjoying the Divine hospitality during the holy month Ramadhan in which we had been undergoing a rigorous training through fasting, prayers, quran, duas, night vigils, charity, concern for other persons and doing many other noble acts we have nourished our ‘selves’ and now return to state of purity. Hence we congratulate each other and greet Minal ‘Aidinwal Fa-izin : May you be from those who have returned and are successful.

Many people wonder why we celebrate Eid at the end of holy Ramadhan. Are we happy that the month has ended and that the abstaining from food and drink has finished? How can we be happy that such a great month of Allah, with all its blessings and mercies has gone away? The actual reason we celebrate Eid is not because we are glad that the holy month is over, but because we are thankful to Allah S.W.T. for giving us the chance and the strength to carry out His commands in the blessed month and hopefully we have attained Taqwa the goal of fasting. On this day we are receiving our rewards to mark our achievement.

Our sixth holy Imam J’afar As- Sadiq a.s. narrates that Amirul Muminin Imam Ali bin AbiTalib a.s. delivered a sermon on Eid ul Fitr in which he said ” O people ! verily this day of yours is the day  when the righteous are rewarded and the wrong doers are losers. It is a day similar to the day you will be standing (before your Lord). Therefore when you come out of your homes to go to your prayer places, remind yourselves of the day when you shall come out of your body to go to your Lord. When you stand in your prayer places remember your standing in the presence of your Lord. When you return to your homes ( after your prayers) remind yourselves about your returning to your homes in paradise…….”
